Just like any other types of HP ink cartridges, installing the HP 74 ink to compatible printers is made easy. The process basically starts with opening the top cover and then pulling out the old black ink cartridge from its slot.

The protective tape found on the printhead nozzles of the new cartridge should be removed before they are placed inside the printer. Once the HP 74 ink clicks into the slot, then that is a sign that you are about ready to start printing. But, you should replace the top cover before you print a test page.

Here are some words of caution though for those of you who are using HP 74 ink cartridges. As with any other type of printer ink cartridge from any brand, you have to handle installation with care. Beware of touching sensitive parts on the cartridge. Make sure that you have matched the cartridge into the right slot as well.

Refilling HP 74 Ink Cartridges

In cases wherein you opt to refill your empty HP 74 ink cartridge instead of buying a new one, you are advised to start the process by laying down a piece of paper or cloth over your working table. This will help you when you need to deal with spillage later on. Then you may now bring out the syringe and the bottle containing the black ink from the refill kit.

On top of the print cartridge, you will find a label. Remove that so that the ink hole will be revealed. You will actually see five holes but the refill hole is the one located on the cartridge’s top center.

You can then insert the syringe in the ink bottle. Fill up the syringe with at most 20 ml of ink. Then you may now insert the needle into the ink cartridge. Push down the plunger slowly. Once you have seen the ink oozing out, then that is an indication that you should stop.

Using the paper towel, wipe off the top of the HP 74 ink cartridge. Remove any ink that has spilled from the cartridge as well. Then replace the ink cartridge back to the printer then run at least two print test pages.
