What Age is the Best Age to Buy Your Kid a Smart Phone? What Do Experts Say

This is a good question to ask especially for those of you who want to weigh the pros and cons of buying your kid a smart phone. In an article published via ParentFurther.com, a writer shares what he has read recently about buying mobile phones for kids. Some 61% of the respondents to the study said that kids should get their first mobile phones when they are in between the ages of 13 and 18. Add to that, one out of three parents who have 9-year olds believe that kids should get their first cell phones when they reach the age of 12.

If you will try to look into this statistics about mobile phones, you will say that parents have different views on this matter. Well, what about owning smart phones?

What do experts say about when a kid should own one?

According to a report published via Kyle 28, during the holidays, parents would most likely want to buy their kids hottest items that can be taken from the shelves and this includes investing in smart phones. In the same news article however, the author pointed out what Waco’s Methodist Children’s Home think about this matter. Cell phones, according to the MCH, may be a privilege, but requires monitoring. This is because experts have already mentioned about the average age when a child becomes curious about pornography and that is at age 11. We all know that pornography can be accessed through smart phones and definitely, giving your kid one will give him the privilege to take a peek at these materials.

In an Education.com article, author Todd Hoffman posted a question stating: “Can smart phones make kids smart?” He answered this question with an interview he made with Carly Shuler, Pockets of Potential author. Shuler said that around 20% of kids ages 5 to 7 own a cell phone. Contrary to what MCH believes, the use of smart phones, for Shuler, should be taken as advantageous rather than disadvantageous for young kids. This is because of its capacity to provide the child what is called mobile learning. Through the aid of tools, such as those downloadable via Apple’s iTunes App Store, parents do encourage their child to learn anytime they want and anywhere they are.

When should kids use smart phones then?

We have seen both sides of the story but if we will try to look into the content of the articles mentioned above, there is one clear message the authors want to convey and that is: responsible parenting. This means that parents should always make sure that if they give their child a cell phone or even a smart phone, they should be ready with the responsibility that goes with it. As Shuler said, these devices are of great help to kids as long as they are managed properly. With proper usage, meaningful learning experiences can be achieved.

It does not matter whether your child is 7 or 11 or 13. What matters is you let him own a smart phone only when you think your child understands that responsibility comes with owning one.
